Chongqing's history begins in the 13th century BC as the capital city of the Ba kingdom. In 1189 the city was given its current name of Chongqing, meaning “Double Celebration” by the southern Song emperor Guangzhong.

Today, the city of Chongqing is a sprawling metropolis and home to some 7,000,000 residents. In 1997, Chongqing became a city province, following in the footsteps of Shanghai, Beijing and Tianjin. The new province of Chongqing is estimated to have a population of 30,000,000 residents.

Chongqing lies on the convergence of the Yangtze and Jia Ling rivers. In the summer, temperatures can often exceed 40 Celcius. The winters usually hover around 5 to 10 Celcius. It is built on hilly land and is not a place for people who threw out their Stair Masters in anger. Winding staircases are found everywhere in the city but often they can lead to some of the more interesting and less traveled areas.

The city was formerly a part of Sichuan province, and is therefore known (locally at least) for its spicy cuisine. The most common of which is hotpot (hou guo). Hotpot restaurants can be found on every corner, on every street in every building and are a must try for any visitor to Chongqing.
